Caster Semenya makes SA Commonwealth Games team; Mulaudzi too

The World 800m champion Caster Semenya has been included in the South African squad of 147 athletes for the 19th Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi, India from October 3-14 2010.

The 19-year-old has made a winning return to competition with two victories in low-key meets in Finland before ducking under the two-minute barrier with a 1:59.50 finish at the ISTAF - IAAF World Challenge meet in Berlin last week.

Her time was still well down on the 1:55.45 she clocked to take World championships gold medal in the same Olympic Stadium last year, but South African Olympic Committee (SASCOC) President Gideon Sam is convinced Semenya will be ready to compete in Delhi.

"I'm very happy to see the return of Caster Semenya to duty for South Africa," said Sam.

"We have observed her progress closely since the IAAF cleared her to run and it's good to hear her say that she's focusing all her efforts on the Commonwealth.

"The fact that she's unbeaten in her three races thus far and has improved her time on each occasion is good news for our medal effort in Delhi."

Semenya was cleared to compete last month when an International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) ban, imposed following a urine sample which revealed unusually high levels of testosterone after winning gold last year, was lifted.

Eleven athletes were named today and apart from Semenya also includes world 800m men's champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, Olympic long jump silver medallist Khotso Mokoena and Commonwealth champions Elizna Naude (discus), Sunette Viljoen (javelin) and LJ van Zyl (400m hurdles).
