Africa team gears up for Continental Cup in Split

The team to represent AFRICA at the IAAF / VTB Bank Continental Cup which will be held in Split, Croatia from September 4 to 5, 2010 have now been named.

The provisional entry lists was released at the weekend and included such heavyweights like Double Olympic champion, Tirunesh Dibaba from Ethiopia, Kenya's 2007 World Champion, Janeth Jepkosgei and 2010 800m World Leader, David Lekuta Rudisha amongst others.

Team Selection Criteria

  • Africa: the basis of the selection was the results of the African Championships (Nairobi, 28 July – 1 August)
  • Americas (NACAC and CONSUDATLE): from the IAAF Top lists as of 31 July with the exception of the 3000m which shall be selected from the IAAF Senior Top Indoor List as of 31 March 2010.
  • Asia-Pacific (Asia and Oceania): selection through the results
  • Europe: the basis of the selection was the results of the European Championships (Barcelona, 27 July – 1 August)

Competition Format

  • Four Area teams; Africa, Americas, Asia/Pacific and Europe
  • Two athletes per team in each individual event, except in the 1500m, 3000m, 3000mSC and 5000m where three athletes may enter with two to score.
  • Team standings determined by the overall points total of men and women combined (there is no longer a men’s winner and a women’s winner)

Scoring Formula

  • Individual events: 1st: 8pts; 2nd: 7pts; 3rd: 6pts; 4th: 5pts; 5th: 4pts; 6th: 3pts; 7th: 2pts; 8th: 1pt.
  • Relays: 1st: 15pts; 2nd: 11pts; 3rd: 7pts; 4th: 3pts.
  • Teams: Points achieved by men and women will be combined and the overall winner of the IAAF Continental Cup will be the team with the most combined points.

It should be noted that Africa is the only continent not to have name two substitutes for their relay squads.
