Athletics Namibia has selected a team of 13 athletes to represent the country at the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Southern Region Youth Championships which take place in Harare, Zimbabwe on May 27.
All the athletes represented Namibia at the recent Cossasa Athletics Championships in Gaborone, Botswana, where Namibia won the event with a total of 58 medals.
Christien Kruger, who won the award for the top girls Under 17 athlete and Israel Tjiramba who won the award for the top male Under 17 athlete in Gaborone, are both in the team.
In Gaborone, Kruger won two gold medals in the long jump and the 4x100m relay, as well as two silver medals, while Tjiramba won two gold medals in the 100m and 200m sprints.
The other girls in the Namibian team are sprinter Daniela Walder, Johanna Shiweda (800m), Faustina Mingeli (1 500m), Shivomwene Shilongo (3000m), Abrille Beukes (high jump) and Sune Wittmann (discus, shotput and javelin).
At the Cossasa Championships Shilongo won gold in the 3000m and Abrille Beukes won gold in the girls high jump.
The Namibian boys team consists of Tjiramba, Wilhelm Rademeyer (shot put and discus), Bredell Wessels (javelin), Marco Buttner (400m), Kevin Mieze (high jump) and Corne Agenbach (discus).
At the Cossasa Champs, Buttner won gold in the 400m, Rademeyer won gold in the shotput, Agenbach won gold in the discus and Wessels won gold in the javelin.
Modestus Mwiila is the team manager, while Barbara Fernandes is the coach and Carmen Walder the chaperone.
The team leaves for Harare on May 25 and will return to Windhoek on May 28.
