Ethiopian distance running legend Haile Gebrselassie has broken the world one-hour record at the 46th Zlata Tetra -Golden Spike, IAAF Grand Prix meet in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

The four-times world champion in the 10,000 metres, two-time Olympic 10,000 metres champion and world 10 km record-holder in 27.02 minutes, sets the new mark running 21.285 km.

The 34-year-old Ethiopian broke Mexican Arturo Barrios's previous mark of 21.101 km, set in La Fleche, France, on March 30, 1991.

Gebrselassie, who has set more than 20 world records in his career, said: "(It's) wonderful for my collection. "I'm glad and I just want to do more records."

Gebrselassie was followed home by three Kenyans in the race. Daniel Limo Kiprop was second with 20,271 km, Edward Kiptum Tabut was third with 19,380 km and Erastus Chirchir was fourth with 18,067 km.

He now plans to break Kenyan Paul Tergat's four-year-old world marathon record of two hours, 4 minutes and 55 seconds at the Beijing Olympics next year.

Last year, he won his first World Marathon Majors title in Berlin, and also claimed marathon victories in Fukuoka, Japan in December and Amsterdam in 2005.

South African and Commonwealth record-holder L.J. Van Zyl won the men's 400 meters hurdles, in 48.64 seconds, after World champion Bershawn Jackson of USA fell down on the last hurdle.

American Ricky Harris was second in 49.58 seconds and South African Alwyn Myburgh was third in 50.08 seconds.

Olympic champion Meseret Defar of Ethiopia won the women's 5,000 in 14:30.18, well off her world record of 14:16.63 she set in Oslo, Norway two weeks back.

Nigerian-born Josephine Onyia, now of Spain, won the women's 100 metres hurdles in 12.91 seconds after race favourite and world champion American Michelle Perry was disqualified due to a false start.

Canadian Felicien Perdita was second in 13.02 seconds while Cuban Tejeda Anay was third in 13.04 seconds.
