Ghana's Ignisious Gaisah has won the men's Long Jump gold at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Australia.

The 22-year-old snatched the medal with his fourth round jump of 8.20 metres, beating Botswana's Gable Garenamotse, who jumped 8.17m for silver, with Australian Fabrice Lapierre taking bronze with a personal best of 8.10 metres.

Garenamotse took the early lead in the Final after jumping 8.15m with his first attempt.

Illegal jumps from Garenamotse and Lapierre in the last round guaranteed Gaisah the gold, though he also failed to jump legally on his final attempt.

 

Jepkosgei breaks Mutola's heart

Janeth Jepkosgei - Source: melbourne2006.com.auA major upset saw Mozambique’s four-time World Champion Maria Mutola was beaten in the women’s 800m Final.

Kenyan Janeth Jepkosgei claimed gold in 1:57.88, with silver going to Jamaica’s Kenia Sinclair in a time of 1:58.16. Mutola ran third to claim bronze.

"The world indoor was very difficult 10 days ago but I'm a little bit disappointed," said Sydney 2000 Olympic gold medallist Mutola.

"I was slow today but I've got to accept that."

Jepkosgei accelerated in the last 50m to overtake Mutola who did not have the power to challenge. Second placed Sinclair also managed to sneak ahead with only 0.61 of a second separating silver from bronze.

 

Kemboi leads Kenyan steeple sweep

Ezekiel Kemboi - Source: melbourne2006.com.auIt was a Kenyan medal haul in the Men’s 3,000m Steeplechase, with Ezekiel Kemboi Yano taking first place ahead of compatriots Wesley Kiprotich Koech and Reuben Kosgri Seroney.

Kemboi Yano won the gold medal in a time of 8:18.17, improving on his silver in Manchester, and matching the gold medal finish at the Athens Olympics

800m golden

Kenyan Alex Kipchirchir Rono also crossed the line first, with a time of 1:45.88, to claim the third gold medal for Kenya on the track. 

Compatriot John Litei Nkamasiai was edged into third, with a bronze place finish only 0.05 seconds behind the silver medallist Canadian Achraf Tadili.

 

Ochichi adds 5000m to Kenya's tally

Isabella Ochichi - Source: melbourne2006.com.auIsabella Ochichi of Kenya has delivered a magnificent run to win the Women’s 5000m Final, crossing the line with a time of 14 minutes 57.84 seconds, ahead of England’s Joanne Pavey.

Lucy Wangui Kabuu of Kenya finished in third place, adding a bronze medal to the gold she won in the Women’s 10,000m Final.

Ochichi led the race from early on, with compatriots Wangui Kabuu and Ines Chenonge keeping pace. Eloise Wellings and Sarah Jameison of Australia, Pavey and Tanzania’s Zakia Mrisho stuck with the group.

Mrisho, who recorded a strong qualifying time, faded with around seven laps to go. Pavey made her first push at the ten-minute mark to move into third place and then moved shoulder-to-shoulder with Ochichi.

 

Van Zyl breaks Commonwealth Games record

Loius Van Zyl - Source:melbourne2006.com.auSouth Africa has won gold and silver in the Men’s 400m Hurdles Final, with a flying run from Louis Van Zyl.

In winning the gold medal, Van Zyl, set a new Commonwealth Games record of 48.05 seconds - 23 hundredths of a second faster than the previous record of 48.28 seconds.

"It's perfect because of the crowd. It's my second big medal this one," said Van Zyl. "To my parents, my coach, I want to thank them."

He was closely followed by fellow South African, Alwyn Myburgh, who took the silver medal in 48.23 seconds, also beating the previous record.

Inzikuru picks Uganda first ever athletics Gold

Dorcus Inzikuru - Source melbourne2006.com.auUganda’s Dorcus Inzikuru, the world’s 3000m Steelechase number one, making her Games debut in Melbourne has expectedly won her country’s first gold medal in Track and Field.

In a dramatic run at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), 24-year-old Inzikuru finished in 9:19.51, to win Women’s 3000m Steeplechase.

Inzikuru led the fast group over the hurdles and water pit, with Rollinson competing head-to-head in the final two laps.

The fast pace eventually broke up the lead group but the two front-runners held identical strides in the last laps.

At the third and final hurdle, Rollinson mistimed her step allowing the Ugandan to streak away into the home straight.

Kiprop picks second

Biniface Kiprop - Source: melbourne2006.com.auUganda's Boniface Kiprop Toroitich wins the men's 10,000m to claim the second gold medal of the Games for the small African nation.
 
The Ugandan ran 27:50.99, just ahead of Geoffrey Kipngeno of Kenya and Fabian Joseph Naasi of Tanzania in third.
