Ethiopia's defending world 5,000m champion Tirunesh Dibaba has successfully added the 5,000m title to the 10,000m she won last week, to become the first woman to clinch the historic double. Following on the lead of the American 200m mens 1-4 sweep, Dibaba led home the first cleansweep of the first four places in a women's event in history at the 10th IAAF world championships in Athletics. Tirunesh Dibaba, who at 19 was the youngest-ever winner when she won the world 5000m in Paris two years ago, held off teammate Meseret Defar in the homestretch to set a championship record of 14:38.59. Olympic 5000m champion Meseret Defar took silver in 14:39.54 and Tirunesh Dibaba's elder sister Ejegayehu added another bronze medal to her Helsinki collection (third in the 10,000m) in 14:42.47. World Junior 5000m sensation Meselech Melkamu was fourth in 14:43.47 Despite an inconsistent 2004, Tirunesh Dibaba's came back strongly in 2005 smashing the World 5000m Indoor record in Boston in January and posting an historic short and long-course double at World Cross Country Championships in St-Galmier, France later in March. Dibaba told reporters: "I wanted to win the both races and I did. It was a fast race. I had a tight fight with Meseret Defar. I was able to pick up my speed and kick past her." "I have been training on my speed. I've trained with 400m kicks to get the speed." "I am very happy for the sweep. I wanted my team mates to run well, too. I am proud of Ethiopia and Africa." |
