Ethiopia's Olympic 5000m champion Meseret Defar edged out countrywoman Werknesh Kidane at the final lap to win the women's 3000 metres at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York City.

The Ethiopian women traded the lead throughout the race before Defar took off with 200 meters to go, winning in a world-leading time of 8:33.57.

Kidane was second in 8:36.39 (bettering Defar's previous season lead) with Kim Smith of New Zealand third in 8:54.32.

Defar said after the race:"It was hot, but good to work hard with my teammate.

"The humid afternoon weather was a challenge. Back at home, there is usually no humidity."

Dibaba's 5000m

World Cross Country double champion Tirunesh Dibaba set an American all-comer's record with a season's best 14:32.43 to win the women's 5000m.

The 20-year-old took apart the previous all-comer's mark of 14:45.35 by Regina Jacobs.

Her sister, Olympic 10,000m silver medalist Ejegayehu Dibaba, was second in 14:46.37 with fellow Ethiopian Sentayehu Ejigu third in 15:09.07.

Tirunesh Dibaba broke the world indoor 5000 metres record early this year during the Visa Championship Series' Reebok Boston Indoor Games.
