A new national men’s 20km walk race record was the highlight of the 1st leg of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Golden League meeting held at the Abuja National Stadium on Saturday.
Aderemi Kazeem of the Nigeria Police finished in a time of 1 hour, 34 minutes and 5 seconds (1:34:05) to rewrite the Nigerian record in the 20 kilometres race walking event.
Speaking on the development, the AFN Technical Director, Navy Commodore [link id=”148″ tax=”post_tag” text=”Omatseye Nesiama” target=”_blank”], commended the athlete for the great effort but was quick to add that he would be subjected to a dope test before the new time is ratified by the Federation.
“As I am talking to you we have already conducted three dope tests, I hope you are aware that a record has already broken in the 20km Race Walk Men which is subjected to ratification.
“The particular athlete has been tested for doping which formerly we are not doing we take our time but now we said no, the anti-doping control will be at all our Meets,” the technical director said.
Herve Taptue of Cross Rivers and Oluwaseyi Lawal of the Police finished second and third with a time of 1:35:03 and 1:38:04 respectively.
In the women’s 10km race, Police’s Queensly Asedo finished tops with a time of 55 minutes and 5 seconds ahead of her teammate Queen Henshaw, who finished a distant second with a time of 1:25:6, and Rosemary Kure of the Mountaineer Club finished in third place with a time 1:27:1.
Obinna Metu won the men’s 100m event in a time of 10.36 seconds ahead of Ogho-Oghene Egwero (10.40) while Peace Alphonsus Uko of the NSCDC took the women’s race in a time of 11.45 seconds.
Cross River’s George Patience Okon won the women’s 400m race in a time of 53.07 seconds while Tobi Ogunmola won the men’s 400m in 46.66 seconds.
