At AthleticsAfrica.com, we supports the first International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP 2014) which is taking place worldwide today, April 6, 2014.
Launched on August 23, 2013 by the United Nations General Assembly at the initiative of the [link id=”335″ tax=”post_tag” text=”IOC”], IDSDP 2014 pays tribute to the role of sport and physical activity as a tool for community development and social change.
April 6 is being celebrated each year by UN Member States and other partner organizations to honour the role that sport plays in society, whether by encouraging healthier lifestyles, making sport more widely accessible or using sport as a vehicle for development in countries made vulnerable by tribal and communal conflicts, deprivation and poverty and social inequality.

Sport is one thing that unites us in Africa, so fellow Africans let’s use this sport as a vehicle for development and peace in our nations.

In Africa, close to 50 events are being held across the continent. From Football matches by school children to broker for peace in Abuja, [link id=”5″ tax=”category” text=”Nigeria”] to basketball matches in Casablanca, [link id=”94″ tax=”category” text=”Morroco”] and a book launch cum publication of the first Africa Sport and Development Policy Index in CapeTown, [link id=”11″ tax=”category” text=”South Africa”].
From the Democratic Republic of Congo to the Central Africa Republic and Mali to Northern Nigeria all the way to Libya and Egypt, our continent has been ravaged by conflicts and wars in the last three years. Sport is one thing that unites us in Africa, so fellow Africans let’s use this sport as a vehicle for development and peace in our nations.
Bless,
Yomi
