Today, we celebrate 20 years since we launched the AthleticsAfrica website on the world wide web. A two-decade celebration of unforgettable African Athletics achievements and moments.
On 25 July 2004, we began the journey to own our space, to tell our own stories, to amplify the voices of our athletes, and to change the stereotypical narrative of stories told about Africans in sport.
It has been two decades of dedication and commitment to the promotion, upliftment and development of African Athletics. From record-breaking performances to inspiring comebacks, our digital platform has been a hub for fans to witness the evolution and growth of African athletics.
Over the years, AthleticsAfrica has played a crucial role in drawing attention to the wealth of talent across the African continent. Athletes from countries such as Kenya, Ethiopia, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa have consistently excelled in the track and field arena, setting new standards and pushing the limits of human performance.
Our platform has been instrumental in showcasing the successes of these athletes while also shedding light on the challenges they face in their quest for excellence.
AthleticsAfrica has not only celebrated the achievements of individual athletes but has also been at the forefront of promoting inclusivity and diversity within the sport. By championing gender equality, supporting para-athletes, and advocating for fair representation, our platform has helped create a more inclusive and equitable landscape for African athletics.
As we reflect on the past 20 years, it’s clear that AthleticsAfrica has been more than just a platform for track and field news and updates. It has served as a catalyst for change, a source of inspiration, and a beacon of hope for young and aspiring athletes across our continent.
The past 20 years have been challenging and rewarding in equal measures. However, we are comforted by our contributions to increasing the visibility and amplifying the voices of African athletes globally, as well as pushing the African viewpoints in the world of track and field.
We are also excited by what the future holds especially as we look forward to the launch of AthleticsAfrica Plus next year.
Our work here at AthleticsAfrica would not have been possible without the followership and encouragement from all of you – our dear readers, loyal supporters, current and ex-athletes, and national federation officials across the continent.
We would like to thank you for supporting and partnering with us for the last 20 years. We hope to continue to serve you, and to continue to tell the authentic African stories without the spin, into the next decade.
Please let us know through our social media channels what improvements we can make to better serve you and the types of content you would like to see on our pages after the Olympics.
Happy 20th Anniversary to all of us.
Thanks, Yommie.
