With just over a month to go before the start of the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, IAAF President Lamine Diack has urged organisers to step up promotional efforts to ensure that the Bird’s Nest Stadium becomes, again, a motivating and inspiring stage for the world’s best athletes.
Lamine [link id=”186″ tax=”post_tag” text=”Diack”], in Cali for the IAAF World Youth Championships, is concerned that the advertising and promotional activities in Beijing are too low key.
“I myself visited Beijing for the ‘One Year to Go’ promotional ceremony in August 2014 and I was in Beijing again in March and again in April 2015 to support the promotional effort,” said President Diack.
“On both occasions, I reiterated the need to invest properly in the promotional efforts to secure what had been promised to us by the Chinese authorities for this event – 100% capacity for the evening sessions and 30% for morning sessions,” said President Diack.
“But at the moment, we see that some evening sessions are still around 50% of capacity, so we need to work very hard in the remaining weeks. We have no time to lose now.”
“Together with my IAAF Council colleagues, I supported Beijing’s bid for the 2015 World Championships because I believed that the event would not only be an extraordinary competition and would strengthen the image of our sport worldwide, but because I felt that it would allow China to unleash the huge potential of athletics in China.
“I call on all our partners in China to support us to achieve these goals,” Diack added.

A un peu plus d’un mois du début des Championnats du monde de l’IAAF à Pékin, le Président Lamine Diack a exhorté les organisateurs à intensifier leurs efforts de promotion pour s’assurer que le Nid d’oiseau soit une fois encore, le cadre idéal dans lequel les meilleurs athlètes au monde évolueront.
Le Président Diack, actuellement à Cali pour les Championnats du monde cadets, a reconnu son inquiétude envers ce qu’il considère comme une approche trop discrète des campagnes publicitaires et promotionnelles à Pékin.
“Je me suis rendu à Pékin pour la cérémonie consacrée à la promotion “A un an des Championnats ” en août 2014 ; j’y suis retourné en mars puis en avril 2015 pour soutenir l’effort promotionnel,” a déclaré le Président Diack.
“À ces deux occasions, j’ai rappelé qu’il fallait investir de manière significative dans la promotion afin de garantir ce qui avait été promis par les autorités chinoises : une occupation maximale du stade pour les sessions du soir et 30 % pour celles du matin”, a ajouté le Président Diack.
“Pour l’instant, nous voyons que certaines sessions en soirée avoisinent juste les 50 %, aussi devons-nous tout mettre en œuvre pour y remédier dans le peu de semaines qui nous restent. Nous n’avons plus de temps à perdre.”
“A l’instar de mes collègues du Conseil de l’IAAF, j’ai soutenu la candidature de Pékin aux Championnats du monde 2015 parce que j’étais persuadé que l’événement serait non seulement une compétition extraordinaire qui renforcerait l’image de notre sport à travers le monde, mais aussi parce je savais qu’elle permettrait de libérer l’énorme potentiel de l’athlétisme en Chine.”
