The South African track and field team produced a superb all-round performance, returning home with 24 medals from the CAA Southern Region Senior Championships held in Harare, Zimbabwe on 10 and 11 June.
Versatile athletes Nienka du Toit and Nicola Schoeman were the star performers, each earning three medals.
Du Toit won gold in the Women’s Long Jump (5.57m), and bagged silver in the 100m Hurdles (15.44) and Javelin Throw (38.60m), while Schoeman also stepped on the podium in the same disciplines to get bronze in LJ, silver in JT and bronze in 100H.
Three other athletes in the squad secured two medals each, including Jason van Rooyen (gold in Javelin and Discus), Sefako Mokhosoa (silver in Long Jump and bronze in Triple Jump) and Jana Steinmann (gold in discus and silver in Shot Put).
“We sent a team out and they came back with an admirable haul of medals,” said a satisfied Aleck Skhosana, the President of Athletics South Africa.
“The performance of our athletes suggests we are on the right track with our build up to the IAAF World Championships in August and we still urge each athlete to work even harder to improve their current performances to a higher level as the bigger picture is to conquer the world.”
The national team scooped a total of nine gold, 11 silver and four bronze medals at the regional championships.
