Athletics South Africa (ASA) has welcomed the timely thumbs-up from the continental mother body, the Confederation of African Athletics, on the on-going preparations for the CAA 20th African Senior Championships.

The five-day African continental championships will be held in Durban, South Africa from June 22-26, 2016.

This follows a three-day intense inspection on progress of King’s Park Athletics Stadium and other areas of interest by CAA Vice President, Vivian Gungaram – who is also in charge of Competitions and Technical issues.

Gungaram, who conducted his tour from May 30 to June 1, said: “I must confess that I am very satisfied with all tasks performed by Aleck Skhosana and his federation by satisfying the CAA with their hard work to ensure that we host a successful Championship.”

On his first day, he said, he began his inspection tour with a meeting with ASA President who gave him a clear picture of all actions taken and implemented, including working with sports authorities and the political authorities of the City of eThekwini.

“From that time I was assured because it became clear that things are really happening under the leadership of Skhosana as the President of ASA.”

Gungaram said over the next two days until his departure he had full access to everywhere he needed to be, including witnessing all the work in progress as had been prior outlined by Skhosana in his briefing.

At the stadium, he was taken on a guided tour by representatives of the Local Organising Committee, where he also got a briefing from senior member of the construction company on site who are responsible for laying out of the synthetic track.

On the synthetic track, the top granular texture of the surface of the whole track has been removed and polished. Repairs where needed, have been effected.

According to the contractor, the track will receive a 5mm top up of granular materials before the start of all measurements and markings by IAAF experts.
