Nigerian track and field star Oluwatobiloba Amusan has been introduced into the University of Texas at El Paso’s (UTEP) Hall of Fame, highlighting her exceptional achievements on and off the track.
Tobiloba Amusan, a former UTEP student-athlete, was the youngest female athlete from the institution to receive this distinguished honour.
In her two years with the Miners (2016-17), Amusan won the national title in the 100-metre hurdles (12.57) at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships, achieved all-American status three times, and finished second in the same event at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Tobi Amusan also won five Conference USA championships and held UTEP records in women’s indoor 60-metres hurdles (7.98) and outdoor 100-metres hurdles (12.57).
This induction marks a significant milestone in Amusan’s career, as distinguished by numerous records and accolades. She made history the first Nigerian to win a World Athletics Championship gold medal in Oregon in 2022, solidifying her status as one of Nigeria’s greatest athletes.
She holds multiple records of the 100m hurdles event, including the current world record (12.12), demonstrating extraordinary speed, agility, and stamina.
The three-time Olympian has won numerous African Games, African Championships and Commonwealth Games titles in the past decade, showcasing her dominance in regional and international competitions.
Another Nigerian star athlete, Blessing Okagbare, was inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame in 2017 for her contribution to the University of Texas at El Paso women’s Track and Field programme (2007-2010).
Okagbare was one of three finalists for The Bowerman Award during her senior year at UTEP — the highest honour given to collegiate track and field student-athletes by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA)
