Nigerian Kelechi Nwanaga broke her 15-year-old national record with a 58.15m throw to win the women’s Javelin event at the 2017 Warri Relays & CAA Grand Prix held at the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro on Tuesday.
The previous record of 55.30m was set by Sorochukwu Ihuefo in 2002.
Nwanaga’s new feat is yet to be officially ratified by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).
In other events, Blessing Okagbare and Ogho-Oghene Egwero both inspired Team Nigeria to victories in the 4x100m relay event in Ozoro.
While Okagbare led the women’s team to a comfortable win in a time of 43.92 secs, the male team were stretched by the Botswana quartet who came to Ozoro with the aim of qualifying for next month’s IAAF World Championships in London.
The Nigerian men’s relay team returned a time of 40.17 secs while Botswana finished with a time of 40.21 secs.
NCAA champion Oluwatobiloba Amusan continued her impressive run this season, clocking 12.97 secs to win the women’s 100m hurdles ahead of Grace Ayemoba (13.53) and Efe Favour (13.63).
Egwero won the men’s 100m in 10.33 secs, followed by Keene Motukisi in second position in 10.41 secs while Harry Chukwudike finished third in 10.47 secs.
Isoken Igbinosun upsets newly crowned national champion Aniekeme Alphonsus in women’s 100m, clocking 11.49 secs for victory ahead of Alphonsus, who crossed the line in 11.51 secs for second, and Mercy Ntia-Obong, who finished third in 11.66 secs.
Agber Shimenge won the women’s 800m in 2:11.29 ahead of Philomena Ihekandu (2.12.17) and Oluchi Offoma (2.12.20) who finished in second and third positions respectively.
National champion Martins Ogieriakhi took the men’s 110m hurdles in a time of 13.82 secs ahead of Abejoye Oyeniyi and Bashiru Abuduliahi .
Yinka Ajayi raced to a new personal best time of 51.30 secs to win the women’s 400m dash ahead of Abike Egbeniyi (52.03) and Folashade Olotu (56.83).
