Winners on day 2 at the African athletics championships in Marrakech 2014

Nigerian athletes dominated the list of 80 athletes selected to represent Africa at the IAAF Continental Cup in Marrakech, Morocco next month, AthleticsAfrica can now confirm.

The Team Africa selections made available by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) is made up of 40 male and 40 female athletes. However, one notable absence from the team is the African 200m champion and 100m semi-finalist Murielle Ahoure of Ivory Coast.

Team Nigeria contributed the highest number of athletes with 17, followed by African Senior Championships 2014 winner, South Africa, with 13 athletes. Six Kenyans, all champions of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, are also included in the strong African team

Both Nigeria and South Africa could have contributed more athletes to the African team, but only one athlete from any one country may compete in each individual event.

The Nigeria and South African athletes also include many 2014 Commonwealth Games champions: Ese Brume (Long Jump), Blessing Okagbare (100m), Cornel Fredericks (400mH), and Khotso Mokoena (Triple jump).

Know more about the Continental Cup

The IAAF Continental Cup 2014 will be held at the Grand Stade de Marrakech on the weekend of September 13 – 14. Team Africa will battle it out for points with Team Europe, Team Americas and Team Asia-Pacific.

Each team can enter only two athletes for each individual event and one team (of maximum six athletes) for each Relay. Athletes are also not allowed to double in the 3000m and 5000m. Only one athlete from any one country may compete in each individual event. Each team may also enter up to a maximum of three overall reserve athletes.

How Teams are Scored
The winner of each individual event will score 8 points, the second will score 7 points, the third 6 points, and so on. In relay events, the scoring shall be: 1st – 15 points, 2nd – 11 points, 3rd – 7 points, 4th – 3 points.

If an athlete (or relay team) does not start or does not finish or is disqualified, the team shall receive no points for that athlete (or relay team) but the remaining teams will receive the same number of points as if all athletes had completed the event. E.g. if an athlete does not achieve a height in Pole Vault, the winner will still score 8 points.

Points achieved by men and women will be combined and the overall winner of the IAAF Continental Cup will be the team with the most combined points.

What happens in the event of a Tie?
If there is a tie in an event, the combined points of the athletes so tying shall be divided. If two or more teams gain the same number of points in the final score, the tie shall
be decided in favour of the team with the greater number of first places.

Should the tie then still remain, the team with the greater number of second places shall be given the higher position, and this system shall be applied, if necessary, to subsequent
placing until the tie is broken.
