Wonder kid Alice Aprot absolutely destroyed the field, and the championship record of Ethiopian Mestawet Tufa from the 2007 All-African Games in Algiers, to take a surprise gold for [link id=”81″ tax=”category” text=”Kenya”] on day Four of Athletics action at the 11th African Games in Brazzaville, Congo on Tuesday.
Aprot blasted through the last lap, lapping her team-mate Agnes Chebet with 120m to go to take her first ever senior title in a new championships record time of 31:24.18.
Her compatriot Gladys Kiptagelai crossed the line in 31:36.87 to take the bronze ahead of World silver medallist Gelete Burka of Ethiopia, who completed the podium in 31:38.33.
Ethiopia’s Wuda Ayalew clocked 31:39.81 for fourth while Chebet ran a season’s best of 32:55.41 for the fifth position.
The first four finishers here in Brazzaville ran faster than the winner (Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot – 31:41.31) at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing some weeks back. As a matter of fact, Burka ran faster for her bronze medal here than she did for the silver medal (31:41.77) in Beijing.

Mohamed Sghaier of [link id=”816″ tax=”category” text=”Tunisia”] completed the podium with the bronze medal in 49.32 while [link id=”81″ tax=”category” text=”Kenya”]’s William Mbeyi Mutunga clocked a season’s best 49.43 to finish fourth.

Commonwealth champion Amos Nijel of [link id=”818″ tax=”category” text=”Botswana”] won a slow but tactical men’s 800m final in 1:50.45 to take his first African Games gold medal.
Defending champion from Maputo 2011 and [link id=”613″ tax=”category” text=”London 2012″] 1500m champion, [link id=”202″ tax=”post_tag” text=”Taoufik Makhloufi”] of [link id=”98″ tax=”category” text=”Algeria”] took the silver this time in 1:50.72 while Job Kinyor of [link id=”81″ tax=”category” text=”Kenya”] finished third in 1:50.79.
Kenyans Timothy Kitum clocked 1:50.93 for fourth place, and Jackson Kivuva paid dearly for his early kick with a fifth place finish in 1:50.98.
Hichem Khalil Cherabi of Algeria won the men’s Pole Vault gold with a clearance of 5.25m followed by Jordan Yamoah of [link id=”7″ tax=”category” text=”Ghana”] with the silver in 5.20m.
[link id=”817″ tax=”category” text=”Morocco”]’s Mohamed Romdhana edged out his team-mate Sami Berhatem for the bronze medal in 5.10m – 5.00m.
Nigeria’s Chinazom Amadi won the women’s Long jump gold with a fourth and sixth round efforts of 6.31m.
[link id=”10475″ text=”Brazzaville 2015 Triple jump champion”] Joelle Mbumi Nkouindjin of Cameroon settled for the silver this time with 6.31m while Algeria’s Tahani Belabiod took the bronze medal with 6.30m.
Nigeria’s Uhunoma Naomi Osazuwa won the Heptathlon with a points total of 5892 ahead of of Odile Ahouanwanou of [link id=”101″ tax=”category” text=”Benin”] who took silver with 5734 points and Marthe C. Yasmine Koala of [link id=”521″ tax=”category” text=”Burkina Faso”], who took bronze with 5664 points.
Another Nigerian Claire Uke won the women’s Discus gold medal with 54.25m from Ischke Senekal of South Africa (50.53m) and Julia Agawu of Ghana (49.08m).
