Three African relay teams qualify for London 2012

Only three African countries made the cut to run the men’s and women’s 4x100m and 4x400m Relays at the Games of the XXX Olympiad in London this month, the International Associations of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has confirmed.

South Africa (2nd) and Kenya (11th) qualified in the men's 4x400m relay but no African country will race in the men's 4x100m event. Nigeria is the sole African representative in the women's 4x100m (6th) and 4x400m (9th) respectively.

As the qualification period for the London 2012 Games ended on Monday July 2, 2012, the IAAF used the aggregate of the two fastest times achieved by national teams in the qualification period of January 1, 2011 to July 2, 2012  - which can be found here to compile the final placings.

According to the IAAF, for the results to be valid for qualification purposes, a minimum of three international teams had to have competed in each race.
