Tanzanian John Yuda and Ethiopian Derartu Tulu were both winners at the BUPA Great South Run 10 Mile race in Portsmouth. Yuda regained his 2003 Great South title despite veering off course four miles into the race. The 26-year-old, along with defending champion Hendrick Ramaala of South Africa and Kenyan Wilfred Taragon, were far ahead of the lead runners before following a television crew's motorcycle, instead of the leading car. But Yuda recovered to win in 46:45, 54 seconds ahead of Ramaala in second with Taragon third in 47:42. Derartu Tulu set an Ethiopian record of 51:27 to win the women's race with ease from compatriot Elfenesh Alemu. Tulu, who had previously won the race in 1996, erased Teyiba Erkiso's previous three-year-old national record of 52:55, with Alemu also 37 seconds under the old mark with a time of 52:18 in second place. Hungarian Aniko Kalovics was third in a time of 52:28. Full Result: Men: See also: Tergat targets Great South Run |
