Tunde Oladele (27/09/2007) The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has announced significant changes to the List of Prohibited Substances and Methods for 2008 as approved by its executive council. The 2008 List offers some changes compared to the 2007 List. For example, the 2008 List will include new classes of substances such as selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs), a family of nonsteroidal molecules that has the same effect as anabolic steroids, and agents modifying myostatin functions including but not limited to myostatin inhibitors. The Executive Committee also approved amending the prohibition of intravenous infusions so that intravenous infusions are not permitted except in the treatment of acute medical conditions. The new List will go into effect on January 1, 2008. The Prohibited List (List) was first published in 1963 under the leadership of the International Olympic Committee. Since 2004, as mandated by the World Anti-Doping Code (Code), WADA is responsible for the preparation and publication of the List. The List is a cornerstone of the Code and a key component of harmonization. It is an International Standard identifying Substances and Methods prohibited in-competition, out-of-competition, and in particular sports. Substances and methods are classified by categories (e.g., steroids, stimulants, gene doping). The use of any Prohibited Substance by an athlete for medical reasons is possible by virtue of a Therapeutic Use Exemption. The following substances are placed on the 2008 Monitoring Program: 1. Stimulants: a) In-Competition Only: b) Out-of competition: 2. Narcotics: In-Competition Only: The WADA Code (4.5) states: "WADA, in consultation with other Signatories and governments, shall establish a monitoring program regarding substances which are not on the Prohibited List, but which WADA wishes to monitor in order to detect patterns of misuse in sport."
