South Africa swept aside the competition to win the team event at the 9th Southern Region Cross Country Championships held at Candos hill in Phoenix, Mauritius. Despite heavy rains, muddy track and bad weather conditions that almost marred the spectacular weekend of cross country running, South Africa won five of the six races competed for. It was not such an easy competition for the runners coming from eight countries of the Southern Region of Africa, namely Botswana, Madagascar, Reunion Island, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Mauritius. The only race which escaped the South Africans was the long cross (10,5 km) won by Zimbabwe’s Luwis Masundo who clocked 32:08 while Botswana's Kaelo Mosalagae and Sewani Chenami took second and third place respectively. "I’m very happy to take the gold medal. The weather conditions were quite difficult and it was a little bit hard to run in those circumstances. "But, I must confess that it was a great experience to run in such a situation with a truly muddy track," said Masundo. Poppy Mlambo had a big smile on her face after the women’s long race that she easily won by beating Samobeliso Moy from Zimbabwe. That was not a surprise as Poppy Mlambo had already won the sixth and seventh edition of the Southern Region Cross Country Championships in Lesotho and Angola respectively. "I’m very happy with this victory as it is my first consecration in the Southern Region Cross Country Championships. Now I’m aiming for the World Cross Country Championships in France," said Mlambo. In the women’s short race (4.2 km), the twin’s sisters from South Africa, Dinahrose and Lebo Phalula took the gold and the silver medal as their team mate René Kalmer concluded the podium. "I decided to run forward with my sister, because of the muddy track we would have bad surprise all through the race and also to keep us safe from any initiative from the girls from Mauritius who were running at home," says Dinahrose Phalula, who four years ago won the 5000m silver medal during the All Africa Junior Championships in Mauritius. The steeple chase specialist, Ruben Ramolefi, who the South Africa Olympic team to Athens last year, won the men’s short race by beating Botswana’s Kaelo Mosalagae, the same who took the silver medal in the long race, by two seconds. The women’s junior race (6 km) went to Irvette Van Blerk from South Africa and who recently recovered form a motorcycle accident a couple of months ago. She said: "Three months ago I had a motorcycle accident, and I’m very happy to win my first competition since my accident. "It was not an easy race for me as I had a hard fall in the first lap. Because of that fall, I lost almost five meters of the other opponents. Luckily, I succeeded in picking up one by one to finally take the lead in the last lap." In the men’s junior race, South Africa’s Nkosinoxolo Sonqibido, had not so much worries as Irvette Van Blerk to win the race.
