Obikwelu beats US opposition

Portugal's Nigerian-born Francis Obikwelu, the Olympic 100 metres silver medallist, showed good form as he dusted both Olympics short sprint champions at the Qatar IAAF Super Grand Prix in Doha.

Obikwelu, who became a Portuguese citizen four years ago, won the 100 metres in 10.05 seconds ahead of American pair Shawn Crawford, 200 metres gold medallist in Athens, and Justin Gatlin, 100 metres champion, who both posted 10.14 seconds respectively.

Obikwelu said: "I'm happy to beat the two Olympic champions and it was revenge because I was second to Gatlin in Athens."

Gatlin admitted defeat honourably and gave no excuses despite having injured his hamstrings while winning 10.15 in Osaka a week ago.

"I got a good start, and there was no problem with the hamstring. Well done to Francis, he beat me and Shawn fair and square, and I'm not complaining," said Gatlin.

Obikwelu rose to prominence after winning the 100 metres and 200 metres for Nigeria at the IAAF world junior championships in 1996.

He went on to win a bronze medal for Nigeria in the 200 metres, after a blistering 19.84 seconds in his semi-final race at the 7th world athletics championships in Sevilla, Spain in 1999.

Obikwelu was also part of the Nigeria quartet of Innocent Asonze, Daniel Effiong and Deji Aliu that won a bronze medal with 37.91, an African record, in the 4X100 metres relay.

Other Nigerian sprinters, former world cup winner Uchenna Emedolu and reigning African champion Olusoji Fasuba were fourth and fifth in 10.20 and 10.26 seconds respectively.
