Zimbabwean quartermiler Talkmore Nyongani has cemented himself among the continent's sub-45 runners with a stunning 44.96 at the final ABSA Series meeting in Tshwane, Pretoria. Nyongani lowered his career best by 0.02 seconds on his to winning the men’s 400m flying through the 300m in 32.9 seconds. Runners-up Ofentse Mogawane (45.42), Marcus la Grange (45.71), Jab van der Merwe (45.73), Hendrick Mokganyetsi (45.87), and Chris Gebhardt (46.01) all also ran their best times this year, with Mogawane and Van der Merwe setting their career best. "I was keen to achieve a personal of 44.80 best today, but I lacked a strong challenge on the home straight, Nyongani said. "Now I hope to retain my title at the Dakar Internationals meeting in a fortnights time." Geraldine Pillay also won the women's sprints in personal bests. she equalled her PB in the 100m in 11.20 seconds and took the 200m in 22.80 seconds, an improvement on her career best of 22.99 which she ran at the beginning of the series last month in Pochefstroom. Janice Josephs 100m (11.38) and 200m (23.16) was runner up in both races. Sprinter Leigh Julius won the men's 100m (10.34) and 200m (20.48). Olympic 800m silver medallist Mbulaeni Mulaudzi comfortably won the men's two lap race. He produced a most inspiring performance to win the race in 1:44.65, with Werner Botha (1:45.62) finishing second. Alwyn Myburgh (49.01) won his third consecutive 400m Hurdles race in the series. Llewellyn Herbert (49.36), Ter de Villiers (49.60), Saudi Arabia's Ebrahim Al-Hemadey (49.70), Louis van Zyl (49.74) followed in that order. Sprinter Leigh Julius won the men's 100m (10.34) and 200m (20.48). Khotso Mokoena (16.89m) improved his ABSA Series record by 20 centimetres in the Triple Jump, while Martin McClintock won the Long Jump with a leap of 8.05m. World champion and African record holder Jacques Freitag continued from where he left off from the fourth series in Oudtshoorn, clearing 2.25 metres in the men's High Jump. |
