South Africa's World Junior Triple Jump champion Godfrey Khotso Mokoena has added another record to his kitty on the final day of the SA Student Sports Union Athletics Championships (SASSU) at the University of Johannesburg. Mokoena set a new SASSU triple jump record of 17.02m with a single jump yesterday, to add to the new SA long jump record of 8.37m he established on Friday. His performance earned him the Male Field Athlete Award and he later told reporters why he packed his bags and left the arena after just one triple jump. He said: "The domestic season has been the most demanding of my career and I need to rest before the huge challenges that lie ahead. "Hopefully our officials can make a plan to enable me compete at the World Athletics Championships (in Helsinki, Finland) and the World Student Games (in Izmir, Turkey) as both events are in August." Louis van Zyl received the Male Track Athlete Award after he won the 400m hurdles in 49.35 seconds, with Pieter Koekemoer (50.02) and Ockert Cilliers (50.25) second and third respectively. Vaal University of Technology's Charles Janjties beat the reigning World Student Games 1500m champion Johan Pretorius (1:51.94) in the 800m in 1:51.74. Reuben Ramolefi won the 3000m Steeplechase title in 9:01.18, whilst current World Student Games 200m champions Leigh Julius retained his national title with a 20.70 effort. |
