Dakar trio show homefans the magic

Mauritius' rising stars heralded their home coming with impressive performances at the Skyline International meeting held at the Maryse Justin Stadium in Réduit.

IAAF High Performance Training Centre (HPTC) students Eric Milazar, Arnaud Casquette and Jonathan Chimier returned home from their Dakar training base, after six months spent away from the island, and offered a beautiful show to their most fervent fans, the people of Mauritius.

Eric Milazar, the three times gold medallist at the African Athletics Championships had an easy win in the 400m in 46.56 seconds.

Jonathan Chimier, the Mauritius best long jumper of the decade, made history by winning for the first time at the Mauritius International Meet.

The 22-year-old who has an impressive prize list – African Junior Champion in 2001, African Senior Champion in 2004, gold medallist at the Francophone Games, finalist in the World Youth Championships in Bydgoszcz, and was tenth at the Athens Olympics – took the Long Jump with a 7.94 metres leap.

Arnaud Casquette came fourth in the Long Jump event after clearing 7.76 metres and declared "there’s nothing stronger than competing at home".

An obviously happy Chimier exclaimed: "You see that! That’s the first time that I win the Mauritius International Meet. I’m so happy to win this meeting for the first time of my career and even happier to win in the presence of Mauritian people.

"I had to stay away from the track for a moment, therefore missing the start of the outdoor season. This is my first outdoor competition of the year, and I’m very pleased to start with a victory,"

Eric Milazar echoed the group's thoughts when he said: "It really a very special moment for us.

"The Mauritius International Meet is the only event where we are competing in Mauritius and the most important thing was not really the performance, but to the pleasure of running for the Mauritian people," he added.

Speedy Buckland

Athens Olympic 200m finalist, Stéphan Buckland, won the 100 metres event with a 10.40 seconds clocking despite the formidable presence of Senegalese Oumar Loum, who finally finished fifth in 10.78 seconds.

Buckland, who left the HPTC of Dakar a couple of years ago, underlined the importance of this meeting when he said it was the only competition were he faces international opposition on Mauritian soil.

"Training in Mauritius is one thing, but running against great athletes like Oumar Loum in front of our public is absolutely exciting," he said.
