Kenyan athletes made it 1-2 in both 3000 metres disciplines despite adverse conditions at the ‘Gran Premio Gobierno de Aragón' (EAA permit meet) in Zaragoza, Spain. Former World record holder and 1997 World champion Wilson Boit Kipketer coasted home in 8 minutes, 27.16 seconds to win the men's steeplechase ahead of compatriot Collins Kosgei (8:28.86). Spaniards José Luis Blanco and 2003 World bronze medallist Eliseo Martín were left battling for the third and fourth positions in 8:29.96 and 8:33.34 respectively. Kenyan Abraham Cherono was fifth in 8 minutes, 36.77 seconds. Kenyan Shadrack Korir took the 3000 metres flat in 7 minutes, 52.98 seconds ahead of his countryman Kiprono Menjo who was second in 7 minutes, 54.37 seconds. Algeria’s Ali Saidi Sief completed the African domination, placing third in 7 minutes, 54.46 seconds. Mauritius' Stephan Buckland won a tight 200 metres race over Britain's Marlon Devonish in 20.78 seconds into a headwind of 2.6m/s. Devonish was timed at 20.82 seconds and Spaniard David Canal was third in 21.48 seconds. South Africa's Geraldine Pillay won the women's 200 metres in 23.93 seconds whilst Nigeria's Gloria kemasuode was third in 24.09 seconds. Reigning double Olympic champion Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj received a standing ovation from the stadium crowd despite opting out of the 3000m as initially scheduled. |
