Kenya's Benjamin Limo ran a remarkable last lap bursting into a powerful finish to win the men's 5000m - his country's only gold medal at the World championships in Helsinki. The 30-year-old Limo worked his way from the fifth position in the final bend to beat Sileshi Sihine of Ethiopia to the tape with a time of 13:32.55. Sileshi Sihine of Ethiopia took second in 13:32.81 while Craig Mottram of Australia snatched bronze medal from defending champion, Eliud Kipchoge in the last five metres, finishing in 13:32.96. Limo, who missed the gold medal by inches in the 1999 World Championships in Seville said: "This evening I feel very proud to win in Helsinki. Really, six years ago I just lost the gold medal on the line. "This year I have managed to secure it, struggling over the last two championships in Edmonton 2001 and Paris 2003. You know it is really quite difficult for us to make the team in Kenya I was hoping to do well in Helsinki and finally I have done it. "The race was slow and I knew the last lap was going to be very fast. But I have trained well and I knew I would be strong at the end." "I have secured the gold medal for Kenya and I am very proud of it. All I need now is to win a medal also in the Olympics," he added. He also revealed his wife delivered a baby boy - aptly named Helsinki - during the three-week long competition. "My son was born on Monday, and it is obvious that I will name him 'Helsinki! he said.
