African sprint champion Olusoji Fasuba blasted out of the blocks to a 10.16 clocking to win the men's 100m at the CAA African Area Permit meeting at the Abuja’s National Stadium. Fasuba, who's also the African 100m record holder, was under no pressure as he coasted home to cheers from the scant home crowd at the Nigerian capital. The 23-year-old consigned compatriots Uchenna Emedolu (10.23) and Chinedu Oriala (10.36) to the second and third places consecutively. Thiam, who was greeted with a standing ovation, did not disappoint her adoring fans as she went on to win the one lap race in 51.73. Nigeria’s Christy Ekpukhon was second in 52.15 while Croatia’s Danijela Grgic, the World junior champion, was third in 52.30. Fasuba was satisfied after the race: "I was sure that I can run between 10.10 and 10.20. "I am continuing my training programme and here in Abuja the weather was very nice. I believe that I can do a good time in Doha (next week)." Last week in Dakar, Senegal, Fasuba (10.17) narrowly edged out Jamaican Christopher Williams (10.18) to win the men’s 100m. Compatriots Deji Aliu (10.22), Uchenna Emedolu (10.36) and Chinedu Oriala (10.39) came in third, fourth and sixth respectively. Fasuba will next Friday compete at the WAT Super Grand Prix event in Doha, Qatar where he sprinted to an astonishing 9.85 seconds continental record on the heels of American Justin Gatlin’s World record-equalling run in May last year. Nyongani, Idoko, Gaisah shines Zimbabwe’s Talkmore Nyongani won the men's 400m in 45.61, with Nigeria's Saul Weigopwa second in 45.77 and Benin's Mathieu Gnaligo finishing third in a new national record of 46.03. Italian Sciandro Livio won the 800m in 1:48.36, with Glody Dube from Botswana second in 1:49.11, Uchenna Emedolu took the 200m in a hand timed 20.0 secs and Ghana's World Indoor Long Jump champion Ignasious Gaisah won the men’s event with a modest 8.08m leap. Sudan's Mona Gabir Adam won the women’s 400 metres hurdles in 55.2 secs with Burkina Faso's Aissata Soulama second in 55.7 secs. American Tacita Bass settled for third position in 57.00 secs. Nigeria's Francisca Idoko with a personal best 11.26 edged out compatriots and favourite Gloria Kemasuode (11.41 secs) and Gladys Nwaubani (11.57 secs) in the women's 200m.
