Kenya has won the annual Hanji Aoki Cup International Chiba Ekiden in Japan. The men's and women's teams swept to comfortable victories over host Japan and defending champions Ethiopia in 1 hour, 57 minutes and 6 seconds and 2 hours, 13 minutes and 33 seconds respectively. John Kariuki anchored the Kenyan men's team home after Martin Mathathi had put the team in the commanding lead dusting Ethiopia's Abebe Dinkesa in the process. Japan broke the Asian record while taking second place in 1:58:58 and USA was third in 1:59:08 - a North American record. The Chiba race was divided up into the standard six relay stages of 5km, 10km, 5km, 10km, 5km and 7.195km which are used for record purposes for the first time this year. Defending women champions Ethiopia were beaten by the Kenyan women's team anchored by the reigning Boston marathon champion Catherine Ndereba. The Kenyans crossed the finish line in 2:13:33, the Ethiopians arrived 43 seconds later, with the Russian women a further 32 seconds back in third position.
