Yomi Omogbeja 2104 Kenya's Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot has claimed his third Boston marathon title in a winning time of 2:14:13, the slowest men's finish since 1985. The 28-year-old race winner in 2003 and 2006 is now the eighth man to have won three or more Boston Marathon victories and the only man to have won Boston and Chicago in the same year. Cheruiyot’s win at the 111th Boston marathon earns him US$100,000 for his efforts and an additional US$500,000 in the World Marathon Majors series. Cheruiyot injected a startling surge as he passed 25 miles in 2:08:10 (4:51), then increased the pace with startling effect., dropping Kwambai, who won in both Beijing and Brescia last year with times of 2:10:36 and 2:10:20 respectively, to second place. Compatriots’ James Kwambai held on to finish second in 2:14:33, with Stephen Kiogoro settling for third in 2:14:47 to complete a Kenyan sweep of the podium. Cheruiyot, coached by Kenyan world-record holder Paul Tergat, set the Boston marathon course record of 2:07:14 last year. Mens' Result |
