The Athletics South Africa (ASA) has announced a new development plan to guide the association in 2005 and beyond.

ASA President Leonard Chuene said the key rationale for the Strategic Plan was to develop a road map for ASA for the next five years.

The strategic plan, which covers three areas of Commercial, Organisational development and Stakeholder Management was to:

  • Develop vibrant brands in all three codes of athletics (Cross Country, Road running and Track & Field).
  • Create a strong commercial framework (through regulations and capacity building).
  • Harmonise relationships through robust stakeholder management programmes and processes.

Mr Chuene said: "The strategy, which was developed by In-Site Sports, following a workshop with selected stakeholders of ASA, and interviews with the executive management team of ASA, is a huge step towards strengthening ASA’s position within the sports commercial space.

"ASA’s vision is to be the most recognised, respected and professional sport organisation in South Africa.

"It was imperative for ASA to develop key strategic objectives in line with this vision."

The main objectives and the focal point of the strategic plan are: -

  • Financial sustainability for ASA.
  • Creation of a strong Governance and Administration infra-structure that subscribe to good corporate governance ethos.
  • Focus on the development of athletes and coaches – a top 5 ranking in the world by 2012.
  • Development of attractive domestic competitions that will be the basis for strong brands.
  • Develop and Implement an effective Communications strategy that creates a good image of ASA.
  • Being the sport of choice amongst South Africans, both on and off the field.
